Tenants Victoria is a specialist community legal centre based in Fitzroy (Melbourne) supporting tenants in public and private housing and rooming houses.  We provide legal advice, referral and representation to tenants and we advocate and campaign for reform to residential tenancy law and practice.   Through our education and training programs, we support other community agencies in building capability to assist their clients.

Tenants Victoria is seeking a skilled and highly motivated senior Lawyer who wants to make a difference by providing legal advice and assistance to residential tenants and make a contribution to our other services and law reform activities.

The role:

You are a highly motivated senior Lawyer with a minimum of 5 years’ post admission experience.

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing legal advice and assistance to individual tenants via our telephone advice line, e-mail and in person
  • Supervision of the Legal Services Team
  • Casework and advocacy (VCAT)
  • Implementation of policies and procedures
  • Training and community engagement
  • Providing advice in relation to publications, training and policy produced by other areas of Tenants Victoria
  • Identification of systemic issues for strategic litigation and policy

Your skills, experience and attributes:

  • Are admitted to the legal profession in Victoria (or eligible for admission) and have a minimum of 5 years’ post admission experience
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in legal casework preferably in at least one of civil litigation, commercial law, administrative law and appeals.
  • Advocacy experience in courts and/or tribunals
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in staff supervision and management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to give practical and accurate legal information and advice
  • Highly developed organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and engage professionally with people experiencing disadvantage
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and a strong community sector
  • Adaptable, open to change and eager to learn
  • Strong attention to detail and outcomes focused, calm under pressure and demonstrated ability to allocate priority to competing demands
