On 8 October 2017, Premier Daniel Andrews announced that the State Government would legislate a series of reforms to the Residential Tenancies Act in 2018 that ‘gives tenants more rights, helps them stay on longer leases, makes bonds smaller and fairer, and cracks down on dodgy landlords’.
Exactly eight months on, no further details have been provided and nothing has changed.
You promised to make renting fair. Now it’s time to get it done.
Tenants are still struggling to find affordable rental housing and experience a lack of stability. Despite the promised reforms, tenants are still being separated from their beloved pets, watching their budgets blow out due to expensive bonds and rental bidding and facing being evicted with no reason.
There are only 18 more sitting days left to introduce these important reforms to parliament this year. It’s time to get it done and put renters on the agenda. We’re counting on you to make renting safe, stable and private for over 1.5 million Victorian renters.
After all, it’s only fair.
Help us put the pressure on.
Our last best chance is to tell our local MPs that this is going to be a problem for them in their local communities. We all need to pick up the phone and call. Click here to find out the contact details of your local MP.
Show your renters’ rights colours! If you want to join us by showing the State Government that you support fairer laws for Victorian renters, you can download and print your own ‘get it done’ signage here on a standard A4 size piece of paper, or a larger A3 size.
